The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer has a special focus on providing services to the medically underserved. A large portion of the funds raised by Washington DC area walkers will stay in the DC metro area through grants to local organizations for the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Since 2000 the Avon Foundation has provided over $28.6 million in Washington, DC and the surrounding region, to support programs including:

  • The Avon Breast Center at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins.
  • Co-founding the Capital Breast Care Center to reach underserved women in the poorest neighborhoods of Washington DC.
  • Development of a breast cancer vaccine, now in Phase II clinical trials, to treat advanced breast cancer and prevent disease recurrence.
  • 11 clinical trials in the region to prevent, treat, or stop the recurrence of breast cancer.
  • Direct financial support to 1,460 low-income women undergoing breast cancer care.
  • 7 community-based organizations, which in 2007 will link 3,325 underserved women into mammography screening and educate 8,850 about breast cancer
